Strathcona Market Impacted by Road Construction: A Call for Fair Treatment

Strathcona Market is facing significant challenges due to the ongoing road construction in our area. The construction which entered phase 2 on July 26, 2024 is forecasted to last at least until August 2025. We fully support the necessary infrastructure repairs and replacements, understanding their importance for the long-term benefit of our community. However, the burden of these projects should not disproportionately impact small businesses like ours.

We have seen the detrimental effects of prolonged construction before, as evidenced by the unfortunate closures of at least two businesses on Locke Street a few years ago. During that time, the street was often empty of workers by 4 PM, and a second shift could have potentially halved the duration of the closure.

Strathcona Market has never sought financial assistance from the city, and we are not asking for a handout now. We are simply requesting that the project budget includes compensation for businesses that are disproportionately affected by these disruptions. Our store is currently reachable only by regular customers who know the detour through Locke Street, significantly limiting our accessibility to new and occasional visitors. We have shared our views & concerns with our city councillor and we continue to advocate on behalf of ourselves and the local food businesses that we support.

Mrktbox Inc (Strathcona Market) directly supports over 100 local small food entrepreneurs, farmers, and producers. The negative impact we feel will have a direct ripple effect on the local food economy. Ensuring the survival and success of our market means supporting a diverse network of small-scale food providers who rely on our business to reach their customers.

We urge the City of Hamilton to ensure fair treatment for all businesses impacted by this construction. Our goal is to continue serving our community without bearing an undue burden from these necessary improvements.

Other municipalities in Canada, such as Montreal, have already implemented business compensation programs to support businesses negatively affected by long construction projects. These programs help mitigate the financial strain on small businesses, ensuring they can continue to operate and serve their communities during these necessary but disruptive periods. We believe similar measures should be adopted here in Hamilton to support the businesses that form the backbone of our local economy.
